Sunday Sweets: Threadcakes 2011

It’s Threadcakes time again, peeps! This is the contest inviting you (yes, YOU) to make a cake of your favorite Threadless shirt design. There are fun prizes, and your cakes are judged by the likes of Mary Alice from Ace of Cakes, Bakerella, Bake and Destroy, and yes, even yours truly. :D

One of my favorite parts is seeing how folks interpret a 2D illustration into a 3D cake sculpture. You know, like this:

“The Friendly Spirit”

So fun. The moss is made from green coloring and ground almonds! Genius.

Here’s a fun throwback to our old-school arcade pals:

“This Game Sucks”

And its 3D interpretation:

By Elina Prawito of bake-a-boo

Now I want to play Super Mario Bros.

This zombie sandwich is an adorable choice for Threadcakes:

Breaaad

And this little cake is to die for!

By Melissa Cody

I love how his little zombie legs are bursting through the baggie! Great detail.

You would think this next heavily detailed design would be impossible to replicate in cake:

“Carpooling is Fun!”

But this baker totally brought it to life. Adorable!
By Jessica Keller

Click on the link to read Jessica’s extensive process in creating this cake. And if you think Jessica’s style looks familiar, it’s because she made the Yoshi cake from last year’s contest!

This is a cute design on its own:

“Pros Cons”

But the baker really thought outside the (cigar) box when building this cake.

The box is made of vanilla cake with white chocolate berry swiss meringue buttercream. Mmmmm…. cigars.

There’s a 2D category in the Threadcakes contest as well. This is where detail and painting really shine.

I love this original design:

“Bloombox”

So naturally, its cakey counterpart is just as fun!

That takes a steady hand.

I wouldn’t want to tackle this incredibly detailed design:

“Sounds of The Ocean”

But the baker really made it pop by adding the 3D elements.

It took Leanne five days to mold all those pieces! Outstanding work.
The designs that feature comics are always fun to see as cakes.

“Captain Obvious”

The paint is key in getting the look right.

By Sarah Woodward

Sarah just graduated HIGH SCHOOL! She’s really got a talent for baking and art… obviously.

This next design has a lot of detail to begin with.

“My Life is a Game (a New Stage)”

But the baker really pulled it off:

By Henry Ma

And finally, this sweet design is a great choice for a Threadcake:

“If On A Winter’s Night Young Lovers”

Absolutely beautiful.

Sunday Sweets: Harry’s Sweet Send-Off

Though the movie premiered last weekend, Potter Mania is still going strong here at the Yates household. I finished up John’s custom carved wand display a few days ago, and we’ve been having a blast searching and sorting through all the Sweets flooding our inbox.

So, without further ado, here are the rest of the best of the best Potter cakes! (Oh, and if you missed the first half, click here.)

First, a magically delicious monster book of monsters:

Have I mentioned that I’d like one of those displayed in my office, too?

This one is like an edible still-life; I had to do a double take before I realized it was cake:

By Cake Central member Goonergirl

Even more I-can’t-believe-it’s-cake:

The lightning bolt font is especially…striking.

[bah-dum-CHA!]

Artisan Cake Company also made the best edible golden snitches:

They’re chocolate truffles, and I totally want to make some. Hit the link above for instructions.
More adorable cupcakes:

For those of you who believe it’s the inside that counts, Darla over at Bakingdom did a fantastic house colors cake:

By Bakingdom

Hit the link to see how she did it.

I featured an amazing replica of Hagrid’s hut last week, but here’s one more:

By Cake Central member PennieK

Ah – wait for it – MAZING.

And here’s another jaw-dropping Sorting Hat, too:

Submitted by Jessica W. and made by Highland Bakery

Complete with a hand painted Hogwarts Express on the bottom tier. BRILLIANT!

From hand painted to hand sculpted:

Submitted by Ellen B. and made by The Sugarcraft Emporium

This Hogwarts Express cake includes the entire platform!

Simply adorable:

I like how the striped board looks like Harry’s scarf. Clever!
Another cool design:

Charm City Cakes (aka Ace of Cakes) again did a castle cake for the movie premier, but this time it was the battle-scarred Hogwarts:

Submitted by Emily J. and made by Charm City Cakes

Turn out the lights, and you’ll see their creation really shine:

…and smoke. Wow.

Well, there you have it, fellow muggles! Hope you enjoyed this ridiculously long Potter Sweets feature. Now I’m off to collapse.

Happy Sunday!

Sunday Sweets: And All Was Well

With the final Harry Potter movie opening this weekend, we’ve come at last to the final chapter (zing!) in a long, beautiful friendship. Assuming your friends like to make movies messing with your favorite books, I mean. (Do NOT get John started, guys. Just…don’t.)

Ahem.

So, fellow fans, feast your eyes on some of the best Potter Sweets ever to grace our Muggle coil!

Submitted by Lee F. and made by Beryl Byrd

I like the way the moon and clouds are supported by thin wires – such a great background touch.

It doesn’t get much more classic than this:

By Debbie Does Cakes

The aging on the book pages is *perfect*.

While I admit the movie’s Sorting Hat is kind of creepy, most of the cakes I’ve seen tend to make him look like he wants to eat your brains. This one strikes the perfect balance, though:

A hat tip to the baker!

There’s more to this next one than meets the eye:

By Deb Kichline

This cake was motorized, y’all, with the top branch rotating so the snitches flew in circles!

It also had a custom cake stand with hidden speakers that played the movie’s theme song. WOW. Hit the link above for more pics and details.

Here’s a fun LEGO version of Harry:

Submitted by Hannah A. and made by Dream Day Cakes

Perfection.

And check out this adorable little Hedwig:

By Lisa’s Cakes

That must be one cool Granny. Love it.

Hagrid also got a squee-worthy makeover:

Submitted by Maggie B. and made by her friend, Lydia B.

He even has his pink umbrella!! LOVE.

Hagrid’s house here looks like a scale model, complete with Buckbeak in the yard:

Made by Mollie and found via

Forget eating it; I want this displayed in my office!

Here’s another amazing Potter cake:

By Yuma Couture Cakes

Hm, can a cake be a horcrux? The symbol is the sign of the Deathly Hallows, there’s a howler letter, Harry’s wand, and check out the crazy detail in the basilisk fang:

And now, some oh-so-adorable cupcakes:

See the cauldron with the spitting flames? I want that one.

Yeesh. Would you believe I’m only halfway through my Potter Sweets? Well, you know what that means: double feature! So tune in next week for more, and if you made a Sweets-worthy Potter cake this weekend, be sure to send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Sunday TREATS: Happy Halloween!

No tricks today; just the sweetest treats to get you ready for all that Halloween candy later tonight. :)

First, a tribute to a classic:

Submitted by Gabrielle K. & made by Erin S

It’s the Great Pumpkin (Cake), Charlie Brown!

A bewitching black cat:

Made by CW readers Sabrina & Anneke V.
I love the spooky effect dry ice brings to this witch’s cauldron:

So. Cool.

Check out these fun colors:

Sub’d by Jessa W. & made by Cakes By Ashley
Now for a slightly more Grim design…

Sub’d by Liz, made by Sweet Honeybee Bakery.

Look at that piping detail! Gorgeous.

Frank here looks more like a spooky art bust than a cake:

Amazing.

And who knew a giant spider cake could be elegant?

I like this fun modern design:

It’s so bright and cheerful!
Speaking of bright, here’s Jack Skellington’s glowing little pooch, Zero:

If you’re wondering why I don’t have more Tim Burton cakes featured today, it’s only because I have enough to do a whole separate post. Look for that sometime in the next few weeks!

One more spooky sweet graveyard:

And finally, I don’t usually mention flavors here on Sunday Sweets, but Darla’s Orange and Chocolate layer cake has me seriously tempted to break out the baking pans:

Plus, aren’t her little pumpkins adorable?

Now look what you get when you slice into it!

Ooooh. Ahhhh.

To try this yourself, check out the recipe and instructions on Bakingdom here.

Happy Halloween, everyone!

To nominate a Sweet, e-mail it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Sunday Sweets Goes Back to the Future!

In honor of Back to the Future’s 25th anniversary, and of my getting to see it on the big screen again yesterday (woot woot!), I decided I simply HAD to feature lots and lots of amazing Back to the Future cakes.

Um, I found eight.

But – BUT – they’re a really fantastic eight. So let’s get to it, shall we?

This diorama of the town square from the movie is actually cake:

And not only that, a wedding cake. Woot!

It even has a mini Delorean:

Made by Caryn’s Cakes

Awe. Some. I just wish there were better detail shots!

And now, some delicious Deloreans:

By Cup A Dee Cakes

And my favorite:

Oh, and before I go on, let’s take a moment to remember the joy that is the cake in the actual film:

Ah, the Jailbird Joey cake. Love it. I’ve seen examples of folks re-creating this cake for their BttF viewing parties, too – such a fun idea!

Getting back to the Sweets, how about a few flux capacitors?

It’s a shame the writing was smudged, because that’s a perfect BttF quote for a 30th birthday. Awesome.

One more:

Found here, but the baker isn’t listed. Anyone know?

Now I want to see one that lights up. (Duff? You listening?)

Mad props to this baker for getting the font just right:

Sub’d by Bethany C., made by Heidelberg Cakes
And finally, one of the great masters herself nearly fooled me with this perfect hoverboard:

By Debbie Does Cakes

Debbie, you did it again. Rock on.
(Oh, and if you’re wondering where her Delorean is, I featured it back here.)

Oh, and if you missed yesterday’s showing, there will be another one Monday night in most AMC theaters. Go here for more info. Then make a like a tree, and get over there! It is your density.

Sunday Sweets: Farmed Out

[singing] Old McDonald had a farm…

Submitted by Alison L., made by Blue Cupcake

E-i-e-i-o!

And on this farm he had some animals:

Submitted Stacey L., made by her friend Beth

This shows that your cake doesn’t have to be big, sculpted, or multi-tiered to be awesome. Love it!

E-i-e-i-o!

With a “baa baa” here:

By the always-amazing Bakerella

They’re cake balls. Unbelievably cute, fluffy cake balls.

And a “cluck cluck” there:

Sub’d by Nancy D., made by Carolyn Mustopa

It’s a wedding cake! How very City Slickers.

Here a “neigh:”

Made by Wrecks reader Joanne P.

There an “apple:”

Made by Heidi Miller

It was inspired by the song “Big Yellow Taxi.” Gorgeous!

Everywhere a “barrel of ducks wearing cowboy hats with a bar of soap:”

Sub’d by Brenda, made by Cakes Unleashed

Before you ask, the “water” is pulled sugar covered with piping gel. Genius.

Old McDonald…

Made by Chocolate Pi

Oops… sorry. Sometimes I get my McDonalds mixed up.

Well, finally, here’s a bonus Sweet for all you Farmville addicts enthusiasts:

By Flores & Aromas

I’m digging those carrots.

Get it? “Digging?”

Sorry; my sense of humor is firmly rooted in puns

Get it? “Rooted?”

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Sunday Sweets: The Fall Spirit

I must admit, the Fall wrecks didn’t do much to get me in the spirit of the autumnal season. So, let’s give it a try with Fall Sweets, shall we?

First, the cutest little ‘shrooms you ever did see:

Submitted by Mathew B., baker unknown. (Anyone recognize it?)

Check out that glass-smooth icing! And the corners – see how sharp they are? That’s the mark of true talent, right there. Color me jealous.

[Quick tip: if you want to know at a glance if a certain cake is covered with fondant or icing, check the corners. Softer rounded edges almost always = fondant.]

Now’s the time when all the cute Fall decorations come out, too. This next little guy looks like he could be a plush statue for someone’s front porch:

By Merissa of Spring Lake Cake

The leaves! The basket! The turtleneck sweater!

Ok, I’m starting to feel a little Fall-ish.

Here’s one for you art-lovers: Remember the classic painting, American Gothic?

No? (And you call yourself an art lover. Tsk.) Ok, I mean this one:

Well, this painting inspired Huascar Aquino to make this amazing cake:

Take a minute to look back and forth between the two. See all the details? How the middle tiers are the couple’s clothing? And the bottom is the building behind them? So. Cool.

This is also the perfect season for anyone whose favorite color is orange. Which, it just so happens, includes yours truly.

Love it.

Chocolate just goes so well with the right reds and oranges and lime greens of Fall leaves, don’t you think? Look at this one:

By baking arts

That’s modeling chocolate pleated around the cake. The texture is so smooth, I could have sworn it was fabric! Plus, look at all the detail on the hand-painted leaves:

Stunning. (And the teensy fruit! So cute!)

Ok, so now that I’m getting more into the spirit of the (allegedly) cooler months, I have to tell you what I’m *really* looking forward to: pumpkin carving.

Those are all cakes! Amazing!

So if my pumpkin carving experiments don’t go well, I suppose I could always try baking one. :)

Speaking of pumpkins…

By Cake is Life

Those soft green stripes look perfect with all the orange.

And check out the topper!

Hard to believe those little leaves and pumpkins aren’t porcelain. Fabulous.

Of course, Autumn doesn’t have to be all about orange. I love the rich reds and golds here:

By Jagode & Dinozavri

Perfection.

More sweet leaves, and a great bow:

By be cheery, who also makes the most adorable wedding cake toppers. Seriously, just look how sweet:

Oh. My. Cute.

Is it weird that I want this? Even though I’m already married? And don’t have a dog? Or blonde hair?

(John? Sweetie? Does that offer to get married again still stand?)

Ok, that’s it. I’m officially in the Fall spirit.

SOMEONE BRING ME A PUMPKIN!!

Have a great Sweet to nominate? Then e-mail it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

Sunday Sweets: An Ostentation of Peacock

I recently stumbled across a gaggle of peacock cakes… Gaggle? No, that’s not right. {Googling…}

I recently stumbled across a muster of peacock cakes that were too beautiful not to share with the world. I also learned that there are a lot of interesting words that mean “a lot.” Lets explore both, shall we?

This peafowl has quite the colony of tail feathers:

Beautiful elegance in a modern design.

This cluster of tail feathers is much more classical:

I really love the bushel of…uh…talent on display here:

And the hand-painted trees and tail are really fantastic.

This profusion of posies makes the perfect perch for a pretty peacock.

The gold detail in this litter of feathers is just enchanting:

By Highland Bakery

And the peacock is white chocolate! Mmmmmm… peacock.

Now for some abstract beauties.

The parcel of hand-drawn lines on this modern design is so intricate:

I want to throw this into an episode of Mad Men where they do a commercial for NBC.

This wedding cake doesn’t have the skein of feathers that the other cakes do…

By One of a Kind Cakes

…but I love the sparing use of peacock detail.

The plethora of mosaic tiles here really sets this bird apart…

…and the cackle of tail feathers is abstractly beautiful.

This trio of cakes showcases some stunning Mehndi designs:

That peacock is pure beauty.

I’m totally in love with this wedding cake:

The menagerie of metallics is stunning.

And finally, just wait until you see the coterie of tiers this next cake has to offer:

That’s a blown-sugar peacock on top. Let’s take a closer look:

So frilly and delicate, it’s more beautiful than a kaleidoscope of butterflies. (Yes, that’s really what you call a group of butterflies. Awesome, right?)

Have a Sweet to suggest? Then e-mail it to us at Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Sunday Sweets: Cartoon Cakes

Time for some heroes in a half shell!

By Lena’s Designer Cakes

Cowabunga, dudes!

Ok, raise your hand if you saw the movie in the theater. As a teenager. With your mother.

What? Just me?

Ok, then, how about a Scooby Snack?

By crazebake cakes and cupcakes

That is fondant-free, my friends! Fondant-free, and fantastic.

This next cake is to make up for our Gummi Bears earworm post the other week:

Actually, that’s a lie; I’m about to stick the song in your head again. (Brace yourself.)

Guuuummi Beeears!
Bouncing here and there and EV’rywhere!
High adventure that’s beyond COMpare!
They are the Gummi Bears!
THEY ARE THE GUMMI BEEEARS!!

Here’s a sweet detail shot, before all the figures were added:

Sub’d by Emily, and made by Liz of Artisan Cake Company (who gets special props for having an amazing airship/steampunk themed website. Love it!) Click the link for lots more great detail shots.
I know we weren’t all raised on the great cartoons of the 80′s and 90′s, though, so here’s one of them new-fangled shows, the Backyardigans:

(Baker unknown. Help me out?)

And from Invader Zim, here’s an adorable GIR cake:

Submitted by Sonya P., made by Paula French (with help from Liz of Artisan Cake Company)

He loves tacos, methinks. Perhaps too much.

Another show I’ve never watched, but that seems to get the gosh-durned cutest cakes, is Yo Gabba Gabba:

By Alessia of Free Spirit Cake Co.

Someday I’m getting the toy yellow robot from this show, and you can’t stop me.

It gets even better, too: check out these life-sized versions:

Sub’d by Justin G., made by Karren’s Specialty Cakes

Actually, I’m just guessing on the “life-sized” part. Are they supposed to come up to your shins? And more importantly, does anyone mind if I hug the green mop guy? Yes? No?

Ok, enough kiddie cartoons. How about a little Futurama?

This is reader Denise G.’s wedding cake, y’all. Her WEDDING CAKE. (Denise, I believe my invitation must have been lost in the mail…)

Here’s another shot:

And we can’t forget the teensy little wedding cake between Fry and Leela:

(The figures are vinyl toys.)

Awesome!

And finally, let’s end with everyone’s favorite beer-guzzling slob:

D’oh!

The details here are just mind-blowing: look at the tiny books! And the tiny phone! And the giant, half-eaten donut! :D

Btw, I believe Erin is still recovering from an accident that severely injured one of her hands some months back. So Erin, we wish you all the best, and hope you’re back to blowing our minds very, very soon!

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!
